BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A land dispute between the City of Bethlehem and its namesake hotel may be put to rest this week.
City Council is due to vote Tuesday on a three-way deal between the city, its Redevelopment Authority and the Hotel Bethlehem that ensures the hotel can continue to use a small parking area and exit lane off Main Street.
According to the agreement, Christmas City Hotel -- owner of the Hotel Bethlehem -- has used the area for parking and an exit lane since the corporation acquired the inn in 1999. The city claims possession of the parking area, while the Redevelopment Authority -- which fights blight and is a conduit for municipal bonds -- says it owns the exit lane.
The hotel asserts that by the doctrine of "adverse possession," the continued use and maintenance of a property, it has acquired ownership of the two plots of land.
The three parties have decided to end the argument.
CCH will pay the city's Redevelopment Authority $100,000, less an earlier payment of $4,250, for a net of $95,750. In return, the city and Redevelopment Authority will grant a perpetual easem*nt for the hotel to use the land.
The deal also settles the status of the drop-off area on Main Street in front of the hotel. That will be controlled by the hotel, not the Bethlehem Parking Authority.
The hotel was built in 1922 and is affiliated with the Historic Hotels of America. The former Bethlehem Steel Corp. owned the hotel for several years.
The hotel was vacant in the late 1990s, raising concerns about the viability of the historic Main Street shopping district, until a group of investors acquired and renovated it.
Bethlehem City Council will meet on Tuesday, July 2, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall to consider the parking agreement and other business. The meeting agenda and a link to a webcast are posted on the city's website.
