George Kurtis, 59

OCEANSIDE – George A. Kurtis, 59, died Tuesday, March 20,2007.

Born July 17, 1947, in Butler, Pa., he lived in Oceanside andLas

Vegas for 36 years. He retired in 2006 as a salesman. He servedin the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a RomanCatholic.

Mr. Kurtis was preceded in death by his mother, Ann Kurtis, in1993.

He is survived by his father, George Kurtis of Stuart, Fla.;daughter and son-in-law Stephanie and Andre Mayes of Oceanside;brothers Gordon Kurtis of Palm Springs and Gary Kurtis of Phoenix;and three grandchildren.

Visitation and viewing are scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday,March 28, at Eternal Hills Mortuary Chapel, 1999 El Camino Real inOceanside.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 30, atEternal Hills Mortuary Chapel. Inurnment will be at 10 a.m.Thursday, April 5, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on CabrilloMemorial Drive in San Diego.

Leonard Berlow, 85

OCEANSIDE – Leonard Berlow, 85, died Friday, March 16, 2007, athis home.

He was born in 1921, in Orange, N.J., and lived in Oceanside for20 years. He served in the New Jersey National Guard. He graduatedas a second lieutenant in 1942 from Medical Administration CorpsOffice Candidate School and served in the European Theater ofOperations during World War II. He served in the U.S. Air Forceduring the Korean War and rose to the rank of colonel.

He received a master’s degree in hospital administration fromBaylor University. He was awarded the Legion of Merit formeritorious service. He taught public relations at the School ofPharmacy at the University of North Carolina, retiring in 1980. Hewas a Fellow of the American Medical Writers Association.

He enjoyed playing golf, bowling, writing for the communitynewsletter and refinishing antique trunks.

Mr. Berlow was preceded in death by his brothers, Sheldon andRichard.

He is survived by his wife of more than 59 years, Emma Berlow;son Bruce of Mystic, Conn.; daughter-in-law Lee Southerland;daughter Barbara Harlan of phu*ket, Thailand; and one grandson.

No services are planned.

William Hardy, 59

VISTA – William “Bill” L. Hardy, 59, died Tuesday, March 20,2007, at his home.

Born Dec. 19, 1947, in Lynwood, he lived in Vista since 1972. Heserved in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He received abachelor’s degree in business, specializing in accounting, from CalState Long Beach. He was a self-employed accountant for 30years.

Mr. Hardy was preceded in death by his father, Lance Hardy, in1956; mother Magdalena Hardy in 2005; and sister Linda Smith in2005.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Debra Elaine PowellHardy; daughters and sons-in-law Julianne R. and Douglas G. Friedof Albuquerque, N.M., Susan E. and Stephen D. Ingles of St. Mary’sGa., and Krista M. and Jason R. Coley of Escondido; and fivegrandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. today, March 24, atEternal Hills Mortuary in Oceanside.

Esther Richards, 91

SAN DIEGO – Esther Richards, 91, died of natural causesSaturday, March 17, 2007.

Born April 12, 1915, in Kattowitz, Poland, she lived in SanDiego for 38 years. She was a self-employed commercial artist.

She enjoyed swimming in the ocean and gardening.

Mrs. Richards was preceded in death by her husband, John E.Richards, in 1997.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan andPhillip Dinsen of Spring Valley; sisters Beabe Saliger of Germany,and Sibylle Swinney of Foster City; one grandchild; and twogreat-grandchildren.

Private inurnment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in SanDiego is planned.

Laura Paterson, 90

OXNARD – Laura E. Paterson, 90, died Thursday, March 22, 2007,at her daughter’s home in Oxnard.

Born Sept. 28, 1916, in Pittsburg, Kan., she lived in Bonsallpreviously. She was a homemaker for 70 years. She enjoyed cooking,homemaking and reading the Bible.

Mrs. Paterson was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bud”Paterson, in 1997.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law,

Linda and Gary Gambs of Oxnard; son George “Bud” Paterson ofParker; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m. and funeral service at4 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at Berry-Bell & Hall Mortuary inFallbrook.

Interment will be at a later date at Highland Park Cemetery inPittsburg, Kan.

The family suggests donations to ProCare Hospice, 1700 N.Lombard St., Oxnard, CA 93036.

Steven Stanley, 53

ENCINITAS – Steven Pat Stanley, 53, died of multiple myelomaTuesday, March 20, 2007.

He was born Dec. 30, 1953, in Morriston, N.J. He worked at theCabrillo Power Plant for 25 years. He graduated from La Jolla HighSchool, in 1972, and was voted most athletic by his senior class.He lettered in football, wrestling and track. He was a Padres andChargers fan.

Mr. Stanley was preceded in death by his mother, Elise; andbrother Jeff.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Kathi Stanley ofEncinitas; father Warren of Encinitas; children Courtney, Kyle andKevin, all of Encinitas; brother Dennis of Oceanside; and sisterWendy of Visalia.

A memorial service is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Sunday, March 25,at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 334 14th St. in Del Mar.

Mary Gilmore, 83

OCEANSIDE – Mary Jo Gilmore, 83, died of heart failureWednesday, March 7, 2007.

Born Aug. 29, 1923, in St. Louis, she lived in Oceanside formore than 18 years. She was a registered nurse for more than 50years.

She prepared meals for the homeless and meals at Easter,Thanksgiving and Christmas for all she knew.

Mrs. Gilmore was preceded in death by a daughter; son; andhusband, James.

She is survived by her Genesis Church family.

A memorial service was held Sunday, March 18, at the StarTheatre at 402 N. Coast Highway in Oceanside.

She donated her body to medical research.

James Frederick, 80

OCEANSIDE — James Taylor Frederick, 80, died Wednesday, Feb.21, 2007.

Born May 19, 1926, in Lawrence, Kan., he lived in Oceanside for30 years. He worked for Boeing Aircraft Company until hisretirement in 1989. He was an aviation ordnance man third class inthe U.S. Navy and served in World War II. He attended St. Francisof Assisi Catholic Church.

Mr. Frederick was preceded in death by his parents David H. andMartha A. Frederick. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, LoisI. Frederick of Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law, Michael D. andSue A. Frederick of Phoenix; son, Steven J. Frederick of Phoenix;son and daughter-in-law, Richard A. and Jessica Frederick ofMurrieta; daughter and son-in-law, Susan F. and Thomas Chopko ofScottsdale, Ariz.; daughter, Catherine A. Barnette of San Diego;sister, Martha Bradley of Des Moines, Wa., and eightgrandchildren.

A Mass was celebrated Feb. 26 at St. Therese of Carmel CatholicChurch. The Very Rev. Nicholas Dempsey officiated. Interment willbe at 1 p.m. April 2 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Rosemary Wesley, 93

SUN CITY — Rosemary Wesley, 93, died Wednesday, March 21,2007.

Born Feb. 7, 1914, in Rochester, N.Y., she lived in Sun City for20 years. She was a member of St. Vincent’s Catholic Church.

Mrs. Wesley was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel SmithWesley, in 1997.

A private cremation is planned.

Samuel Grove, 59

TEMECULA — Samuel L. Grove, 59, died Monday, March 19, 2007, inBakersfield, he lived in Temecula for 20 years. He served in theU.S. Army. He was a member of Stone Creek Bible Church inTemecula.

Mr. Grove is survived by his wife of 28 years, Betty Grove ofTemecula; sons Samuel W. Grove of Irvine, and Christopher Grove,Timothy Grove and Thomas Grove, all of Temecula; and brother,Norman Grove of Las Vegas.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25, atRancho Community Church in Temecula.

Leonard Berlow

Leonard Berlow passed away at home in Oceanside on March 16,2007. He was born in

Orange, N.J., in 1921. He was the son of Elias and RoseBerlow.

In September 1940, Leonard joined the New Jersey National Guardas a private. He was selected for the Medical Administration CorpsOfficer Candidate School, and graduated as a second lieutenant in1942. Various military assignments took him to the European Theaterof Operations during WWII. He returned to active duty in the UnitedStates Air Force during the Korean conflict and rose to Colonel.His duty assignments included various medical units as a hospitaladministrator. During his military career, Colonel Berlow earned abachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and a master’sdegree in Hospital Administration from Baylor University. Upon hisretirement from the U.S. Air Force in 1970, he was presented withthe Legion of Merit for meritorious service.

After retirement from the Air Force, Colonel Berlow joined thefaculty of the School of Pharmacy of the University of NorthCarolina, where he taught public relations. He retired in 1980.

During his military and university careers, he wrote severalbooks and over 70 of his articles appeared in various publications.He was a Fellow of the American Medical Writers Association.

During the last 20 years, Leonard and Emma made their home inthe Ocean Hills community in Oceanside, California, where heenjoyed playing golf, bowling, writing for the community newsletterand refinishing antique trunks.

Leonard was married to

Emma, who survives him, for over 59 years. He was predeceased bytwo brothers, Sheldon and Richard. He leaves a son, Bruce, aphysician in Mystic, Connecticut, and daughter-in-law, LeeSoutherland; a grandson, Clifford, in Chicago, Illinois; and adaughter, Barbara Harlan, in phu*ket, Thailand.

Leonard died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Nofuneral or memorial services are planned.

William ‘Bill’ L. Hardy, 59

William Lance Hardy, age 59, of Vista, Calif., died March 20,2007, at his home. He was born December 19, 1947, to Lance andMagdalena Hardy in Lynwood, Calif.

Bill attended Lynwood High School and enlisted in the Army atthe age of 19.

He served his country during the Vietnam War from 1967-1969.Upon his return from his tour of duty in Vietnam, Bill decided topursue a career in accounting and attended Cal State Long Beach,where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business, specializing inaccounting. It was at this time he met the love of his life, DebraElaine Powell. They were married September 23, 1972. Uponrelocating to Vista, Calif., in 1972, Bill went to work for DiehlEvans and Company. In 1976 Bill began his own accounting practice.He built his business from the ground up and was a successfulbusinessman in the city of Vista for the next 30 years.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, in 1956; his mother,in 2005; and his sister, Linda Smith, also in 2005.

Bill is survived by his wife, Debra, of 34 years, his threedaughters and sons-in-law, Julianne R. and Douglas G. Fried, ofAlbuquerque, N.M., Susan E. and Staff Sergeant Stephen D. Ingles ofSt. Mary’s, Ga., and Krista M. and Jason R. Coley of EscondidoCalif.; five grandchildren, Lance and Ashley Fried, and Austin,Zachary and Madalynn Grayce Ingles.

Bill will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.He was a kind man who put everyone else’s needs before his own.Please continue to keep his family in your thoughts andprayers.

Visitation was held Friday, March 23, 2007, from 4 to 8 p.m.

A service will be held on today, March 24, 2007, at EternalHills Mortuary, in Oceanside, CA at 1 p.m.

SUN CITY — Neva Louise Miller, 90, died Saturday, March 17,2007, in Sun City.

Born March 24, 1916, in El Paso, Texas, she was a high schoolgraduate. Neva was an accomplished seamstress and won numerousawards at the Farmers Fair for crocheting afghan blankets. She wasa member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and theMayflower Society.

Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her mother and father,Harry and Louise Mumford, and her husband, Sidney, who died in2000.

Mrs. Miller is survived by her daughter, Sydney Leavelle of SanGabriel; son, Richard Miller of Sun City; three grandchildren; andsix great-grandchildren.

Burial will be at sea.
